Oak Park was officially established as a separated community, the first
"suburb" of Sacramento, in 1889. The area, the site of stockyards, crops,
orchards and vineyards, actually began as a sparsely developed farming
community when first settled 150 years ago.

In 1911, Oak Park was annexed to the city of Sacramento. By that time,
residential growth had reached approximately 7,000 persons, primarily
blue-collar families of English, Irish and German origin.

The "downtown" of this older predominantly residential area included a
retail district and theater along Broadway and 35th streets.
