For the unaffiliated, Hebrew school used to mean one thing and one thing
only: It was time to join a shul.

But now, a new trend is on the horizon, and it doesn't involve dragging the
kids to open-house barbecues. A number of small, supplementary Hebrew
schools that do not require synagogue membership have cropped up in the
past few years.

That could potentially save parents a wad of cash, since membership costs
for a family of four, combined with Hebrew-school tuition (not to mention a
building fund), can run in the thousands.
