As Senator John Forbes Kerry heads back to his spiritual heartland
and political power base in Massachusetts, the Democrat contender
must know that he has given the presidential campaign his best
possible shot. He has beaten President George W Bush in three open
debates, come from behind to narrow a gap which was in danger of
becoming a chasm and has shown that he has what it takes to gain
entry to the White House. He also understands that he carries with
him the hopes and prayers of millions of people - not all of them
Americans - who are praying that he will beat Bush, even by the
