HIS legend is being over-indulged. Anything and everything is
being done to keep the King tied to the throne and the bucks rolling
in." That was John Lennon on Elvis Presley, shortly after the
latter's undignified death from a heart attack in August 1977. Just a
few years later Lennon himself was dead. The circumstances were
different of course . . .
the former Beatle was gunned down outside his New York apartment
on December 8, 1980 . . . but Lennon's words could easily describe
the way his own image has been manipulated in the 25 years since his
murder.
