National Geographic and the New Republic are taking home to
Washington the highest honors their industry offers, National
Magazine Awards for general excellence.
And sweetening these prestigious rewards are additional prizes
- in the New Republic's case for reporting, and in National
Geographic's for photography. The New Republic also has the rare
distinction of winning the prize for general excellence in its
under-100,000 circulation category for the second consecutive year.
The awards, presented here today before nearly 1,300 editors,
publishers and writers, were a tonic for two magazines emerging from
