FIRST Milk is gearing up to buy rival firms as part of an aggressive strategy to turn the milk co-operative into a dairy business that makes its own consumer products and sells directly to retailers.

Peter Humphreys, who took over as chief executive six months ago, said that he had aspirations to take Glasgow-headquartered First Milk down a similar path as New Zealand's Fonterra.
