CABBAGE soup and cutting carbs are so last year - and a new diet which recommends drinking sugared water or eating spoonfuls of olive oil is aiming to become the slimming fad of 2007.

The Shangri-La diet bills itself as "the biggest diet sensation to come out of America since Atkins". It claims that drinking small amounts of extra-light olive oil or plain sugar water between meals helps to control the appetite.

The slimming regime is just one of a number being touted in an avalanche of new diet books due to be published in January to cash in on those people determined to shed the pounds they've put on over the festive season.
