NEW YORK (HedgeWorld.com) - The CSFB/ Tremont* Hedge Fund Index finished December up 1.2%, pushing the alternative benchmark to a year-end showing of 4.4% in 2001, a period in which traditional indices like the S&P 500 and Nasdaq fell by double digits.

In absolute terms, 2001 was the worst year on record for the alternative benchmark since 1998, when hedge funds tracked in the index fell 0.36%, while the Standard & Poor's 500 Stock Index gained 26.7%.
