Redefining the Refugees Right now, UNRWA lists 3.8 million
Palestinian refugees. But under the narrow criteria of the leading
United Nations refugee body, UNHCR, that number would fall to fewer
than a million. So why would two Palestinian advocacy groups want
the UNHCR to take charge?
Erik Schechter IBRAHIM ABU NIMER, 73, lives in the Jalazoun
refugee camp north of Ramallah with his wife, Halimeh, 8 children and
36 grandchildren. Abu Nimer is originally from Jaffa, where his
father and grandfather were known as prominent merchants. The family
fled its seaside home in 1948, and found refuge first in a refugee
camp outside Jericho, and later in Jalazoun.
