SHINUI'S DRAMATIC GAINS ON January 28 should be credited, in
large part, to its success in reinventing itself as the authentic
voice of Israel's downtrodden middle-class. No longer a one-issue
party dedicated to bashing the ultra-Orthodox, it nominated itself,
rather, as the representative of all those Israelis who pay more
taxes, do more reserve duty and have much less to show for it at the
end of the month. For Israel's struggling middle class, Shinui's call
to cut taxes and force the ultra-Orthodox to join the labor market
has understandable appeal.
But does Shinui's message really jibe with the interests of the
middle class? That, of course, depends on how you define middle
