Article: USAir, Pilots Reach Tentative Accord; Contract Agreement Seen as Breakthrough for Troubled Airline

USAir Group Inc. and its pilots union reached a tentative agreement early yesterday on a four-year contract that would cut salaries for a year to give the money-losing airline some breathing room, but then would make the pilots among the highest paid in the industry.

The agreement, which still must be ratified by the pilots, is a major breakthrough for the airline - both because it is expected to set the pattern for settlements with the other two USAir unions and because it triggers pay and benefit cuts for noncontract workers at USAir.
