The Food Standards Agency is to continue to press for changes to
European Union rules which will partially re-impose a beef-on-the-
bone ban as soon as the UK is allowed to resume beef exports.
Britain allows beef-on-the-bone products such as rib roasts and T-
bone steaks into the food chain from cattle aged under 30 months.
But the rule elsewhere in Europe, and which will be implemented
domestically in the UK as soon as exports resume, is to only allow
beef with vertebral bones attached to be sold from cattle under 24
months.
Britain has already argued in discussions in Europe in the last
year for the European rule to be harmonised with the UK.
