Article: New ferry operator in line for pounds31m subsidy in first year

A Subsidy of pounds31million has been awarded to the new company running the northern isles ferry services for its first year of operations.

The routes from the mainland to Orkney and Shetland were taken over yesterday by NorthLink Ferries, formed after Caledonian MacBrayne was named the preferred bidder for the contract earlier this year.

The new company - which takes over from NorthLink Orkney and Shetland Ferries - has taken on the staff of the former operator, a joint venture between CalMac and the Royal Bank of Scotland, which pulled out of its contract early after financial pressures.
