The Alexandria Department of Social Services announced last week
that it will close its long-running Alexandria Day Care Center for
low-income families at the Lyles-Crouch School at the end of June.
City officials said low-income families will be better served if
the center's funding is used instead to subsidize disadvantaged
children in private day-care facilities. All of the children at the
center will continue to receive day care, in private or in-home
facilities, and they still will receive subsidies.
In addition, the Head Start for the Homeless program, which has
been operating at the Alexandria Day Care Center since 1989, will be
moved to one of the Head Start centers operated by ...
