The UK's first National Pizza Day took place yesterday. To
celebrate this famous meal, the founder of Heavenly Pizzas, James
Cummings, talks us through the history of the pizza and why it's such
a firm favourite in the UK
Pizza is generally believed to have originated Italy, but it was
actually first made by the early Greeks, who baked large, round, flat
breads topped with spices, potatoes and olive oils.
In the 18th century, the idea of flat bread found its way to
Italy, where the "pizzas" were sold on the streets and in markets.
Enjoyed without topping, they were relatively cheap to make and were
tasty and filling, and were sold to the poor all over Naples by
street vendors.
