New Census Bureau figures on job growth in metropolitan Washington confirm what local economists and labor market experts have been telling us all along. More than that, however, they also underscore the importance of the federal government to the local economy.

As reported earlier, 1990 census statistics show that the area's private sector now employs more people than the federal government, the main source of jobs here prior to the 1980s.
