A New environmentally-friendly visitor centre at the late Queen
Mother's home in Caithness is expected to give a welcome boost to
tourism in Scotland's far north.
And the new attraction at the Castle of Mey, coupled with a move
to opening seven days a week, has doubled the number of local people
employed there from 17 to 34.
Last year, 23,400 people visited the impressive property - the
most northerly castle on the UK mainland - and it is hoped that it
will this year have at least 26,000 visitors.
The pounds900,000 visitor centre, which includes a restaurant, and
a shop, has been designed by Tain-based architect Lachlan Stewart to
blend with the construction of the castle.
