Free personal care for the elderly cost pounds237million last year, according to figures released yesterday.

The number of people receiving free care has crossed the 50,000 mark for the first time.

The figures were disclosed in official statistics showing increases in spending on both personal and nursing care.

The total receiving free care has increased steeply since the policy was introduced in July 2002, the figures show.

This was partly down to under-estimates by local authorities in the early years while monitoring systems were put in place.
