Drugs chiefs are investigating whether to ban the date-rape drug
chemical that a Scottish bodybuilder smuggled out of the country.
Aberdeen man David Calder, 36, was jailed for nearly six years in
California earlier this week for his part in a drug-manufacturing
operation.
Calder sold a chemical over the internet which is legal in this
country but not in America.
The gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) was used in the US to produce the
infamous date-rape drug gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) which is illegal
in the UK. GBL is known as a precursor to the second drug - it
creates the substance when mixed with sodium hydroxide. But GBL
itself can also be used as a date-rape drug - and now an influential
