M. F. K. Fisher, 83, a noted food writer who blended her passion
for gastronomy with reveries, observations and recipes, died June 22
at her home in Glen Ellen, Calif. She had Parkinson's disease.
W. H. Auden once called Miss Fisher "the best prose writer in
America," and food writer Craig Claiborne said her translation of
"Physiology of Taste," the 1825 work of the French gastronomer Jean
Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, was "a great contribution to the writing
in this country."
In all, Miss Fisher produced 26 books and compilations of
writings - among them, "Serve It Forth," "How to Cook a Wolf," "The
Gastronomical Me," "Consider the Oyster" and "An Alphabet For
