Article: Donkeys rescued from Italian meat markets

A leading Westcountry donkey charity has opened a new sanctuary in Italy to prevent hundreds of the animals being turned into salami.

The Donkey Sanctuary, based in Sidmouth, has bought a farm in the Turin region to prevent unwanted donkeys being sold to meat markets.

There are an estimated 24,000 donkeys in Italy and they are used for meat sold in markets in salami form and served up in stews in restaurants. Other uses include transportation in farming areas, animal assisted therapy, holiday treks and as pets.

Staff have already taken in 24 animals at the new sanctuary but they have space for hundreds of donkeys and are now rescuing the animals in rural communities across Italy.
