Opponents dismiss them as "fruitcakes" and "gadflies", they have
been riven by political infighting, and they flopped at last year's
General Election. But as Nigel Farage surveyed his inheritance as the
new leader of the UK Independence Party yesterday he was remarkably
upbeat.
The 42-year-old former stockbroker has long been his party's most
charismatic performer and was a comfortable winner in this week's
contest to replace UKIP's Devon-based former leader Roger Knapman.
His election is something of a gamble for a party that has rapidly
become a significant force in Westcountry politics, but which has
