Article: How you can stem the junk mail tide

The UK's doormats are littered with tons of junk mail each day - and the problem is set to worsen. Royal Mail is trying to have restrictions on the number of junk letters it delivers a week lifted so that it will be able to deliver unlimited letters.

Unsurprisingly, research shows that nearly three quarters of households don't want it. But it's not only the annoyance of receiving junk mail; there is also an environmental cost.

With only a third of direct mail being recycled, thousands of tonnes are simply thrown in the bin. According to the Local Government Association, 78,000 tonnes of junk mail were sent to landfill last year.
