Although members of the Women's Land Army made a significant
contribution to this country's war efforts in both world wars, as the
very first page of Digging For Memories: The Women's Land Army In
Cornwall remind us, despite all they did and rather like the Bevin
boys, when hostilities ended they were largely ignored by the powers
to be.
They had to wait until the year 2000 before they were included in
the annual Remembrance Day parade at the Cenotaph, and then only to
march at the back.
Sadly, that was but one of the indignities they suffered.
On disbandment at the end of the war they received none of the
benefits afforded to the other women's services. no gratuities, no
civilian clothes ...
