The final race of the U.S. Olympic track and field trials
produced another dreadfully telling moment for Carl Lewis, who
little more than a week ago was the most celebrated sprinter in the
world.
Lewis, three days from turning 31, suffered another crushing
defeat, finishing fourth by 1/100th of a second in the 200 meters
and missing the 1992 Olympic team in his second sprinting event. He
will not run in either the 100 or 200 in Barcelona; he simply will
be the country's second-best long jumper and a 4x100-meter relay
alternate.
Michael Johnson, the 1991 world champion and heavy favorite in
the race, won in 19.79 seconds, equaling the fourth-fastest time
