When was the last time you saw a traffic police car cruising the
motorway or the busy streets of our towns? Over the past 10 years,
the number of traffic police has decreased by over 2,000. They have
been replaced by 7,000 speed cameras, which the so-called "Safety
Camera partnerships" believe are more effective in reducing road
accidents. Speed, they claim, is responsible for one third of all
road accidents and more cameras are the solution to the problem.
What arrogant nonsense! According to the Department for
Transport's own data, only 4 per cent of all road accidents are
caused by exceeding the speed limit.
