Article: Lament for the decline of Royal Navy

I am writing to thank you for the edited article on the Royal Navy by Charles Strathdee - grim reading for all with the well-being of our country at heart.

Of course, those interested in the defence of our land have been aware of the steady decline of the strength of the Royal Navy.

I have seen evidence, at first hand regrettably, of the reduction in both our Merchant Navy and the Royal Navy during 16 years of watchkeeping as an auxiliary coastguard. It has been especially painful for me, having been born within a stone's throw of the sea at Coverack and coming from a family of lifeboatmen, fishermen and Merchant and Royal Navy seamen.
