The planned return of Gipsy Moth IV to Plymouth today is 40 years
to the day since my father, Sir Francis Chichester, completed his
solo circumnavigation. It represents the culmination of a tremendous
effort and achievement to bring Gipsy Moth IV back to life and off on
another adventure round the world - a much better fate than befell
the Pelican, better known as the Golden Hind, in which Sir Francis
Drake became the first Englishman to sail round the world.
Poor old Golden Hind rotted away at Rotherhithe on the Thames and
barely lasted 50 years after her triumph.
Gipsy Moth IV was rescued from a similar fate in dry dock by a
great co-operative effort sparked by Paul Gelder, editor of ...
