The economy of rural Mid Devon in 2006 - partly reliant on a
handful of big-name employers such as Lloyd Maunder, Reuters and
Heathcoats - remained at the mercy of globalisation.
At the same time, budding regeneration projects in two of the
district's biggest towns, Tiverton and Crediton, were welcomed by the
retail sector.
But there were fears throughout the past year that large
supermarket developments could create ghost town-style high streets
in these bustling market towns.
There were also fears that at least some of the 400 Reuters staff
in Tiverton could face redundancies after the news firm merged with
Canadian rival Thomson. So far, however, no job losses have been
announced.
