Great balls of fire need a cool hand

The heat throws me backwards, its ferocity unexpected. It sears my arm as I approach the furnace, iron in hand, to collect a dollop of bright orange molten glass. It isn't a hot day outside, but here the sweat is pouring down our faces. The fans are going full pelt.

I attempt to twirl the heavy iron like a honey spoon in the fiery orange cavern, catching all the drips. It is hard to manipulate. Experienced glassworker Paul Harris takes over, and shows me how it is done, with the flick of the wrist, gathering a bulbous fireball and extracting it from the furnace.
