Article: In Ocean City, Success of Seasonal Stores Isn't a Shore Thing

From her tiny chilled storefront here, Annette Day has spent the last 14 summers selling fudge to oiled and peeling customers who shuffle in off the steamy boardwalk.

She won't say just how many pounds of the cream-and-butter concoction go out the door, but the sales figures for Jessica's Fudge House Inc. each June, July and August make it possible for Day to board up her business in September, before the gales of winter blow in off the sea.

"It's a living," said Day, who is a high school volunteer during the off season. "It's risky, depending on what your goals are, but it can be a productive living."
