The evil of human trafficking has recently come to the attention
of British politicians. The House of Lords debated it on June 28,
when Lord Sheikh introduced the subject.
In the following discussion it was agreed that the British
Government should be urged to "address the causes and impact of this
serious problem".
Hansard reported that the majority of women trafficked for
prostitution came from East Europe, following promises of work,
marriage or education. In reality they become human slaves.
The Government estimates that there are about 4,000 such women in
Britain at any one time and that the majority of women in brothels
come from this source.
