Long-time Christchurch barrister and amateur thespian Raoul Neave
has been sworn in as a district court judge at a ceremony in the
Christchurch District Court.
Neave yesterday received his general and jury warrants from Chief
District Court Judge Russell Johnson who said Neave was well
qualified in legal and life experience for the job.
He said Neave was beginning his task in challenging times for the
judiciary, when new laws of evidence and a new and increasingly
complex sentencing regime had been introduced.
Drug and violent offenders were attracting more custodial
sentences.
The number of offenders on custodial remand was increasing, and
the district courts were "in the thick of it".
