The helicopters associated with Froedtert Hospital's Flight for Life usually signal trauma, a life in the balance.

But on Saturday, the chopper hovering over St. Mary Catholic Church in Hales Corners will do so in celebration of a life that influenced many in that faith community and beyond.

James R. Ryan, longtime Hales Corners village president and founder of the region's Flight for Life program, died Tuesday morning after a battle with stomach cancer. He was 63.

Ryan, who also served as president of the Penfield Children's Center for the past 11 years, was with his family at the time of his death, said Pat LeSage, a friend who spoke Tuesday on behalf of the Ryans.
