Few paintings have traveled as much as Pablo Picasso's
"Guernica." An artistic exile that became the most potent symbol of
Spain's struggle against fascism, it was shown throughout Europe and
the United States before finally coming to Spain decades later. Last
week the canvas was on the road once more, loaded in the early
morning hours onto a truck and driven under heavy police escort from
the Prado Museum to a contemporary art center a half-mile down the
road.
According to advocates of the transfer, "Guernica" has reached
its final destination, where it will provide a focus for an
inspiring new modern art collection. But opponents condemn the move
as one too many. It is a controversy ...
