Thomas A. Duckenfield, 57, vice president and general manager of
the D.C. division of Washington Gas Co. and a former president of
the National Bar Association, died of meningitis July 31 at
Washington Hospital Center.
He worked for the gas company for seven years, starting as
assistant general counsel. He was president of the bar association,
the largest African American law association, in 1989 and 1990.
Mr. Duckenfield, a native of Richmond, served in the Army Signal
Corps in West Germany in the 1950s. He was a graduate of Hampton
University and the Georgetown University law school, and he
received a master's degree in business administration from Southern
