writing after retiring. He is currently working on a semi-
autographical book about life in the village of Ockbrook between the
years of 1945 and 1957. In this extract from his manuscript he
recalls how smoking was taken for granted as a habit of the era.
In the years after the war the majority of adults smoked. The
habit was not merely the prerogative of the workers at the bottom of
the social order either - it was not unknown for the local doctor to
be puffing away at a Capstan Full Strength or similar while he
attended to the coughing, wheezing unfortunates peering through the
haze in his gloomy waiting room.
