Several hundred thousands pounds of ground beef sold at as many
as 235 Giant Eagle outlets may have been contaminated with a
potentially deadly bacteria, company officials announced today.
Giant Eagle spokesman Rob Borella said ground beef products on
the company's shelves now are safe. However, cetain ground beef
products with a sell date in October may have E. coli, a bacteria
that can cause bloody diarrhea and dyhydration.
"The good news is as of 1 o'clock today the U.S. Department of
Agriculture doesn't have any reported cases of customer illness,"
Borella said.
One of Giant Eagle's suppliers, Cargill Meat Solutions Corp.,
voluntarily recalled more than 1 million pounds of ground beef ...
