My father, Harry S. Truman, would not be flattered, but he
surely would be flabbergasted to learn that he has become the mascot
of the Republican Party and the model for President Bush's campaign
for reelection.
I certainly have been astonished, sitting in my home in New
York listening to Republican orators on TV praise the 33rd President
of the United States, he who was always so staunchly Democratic and
won the 1948 campaign with an unrelenting attack on the Republican
majority in the "do-nothing 80th Congress," as he called it.
