About 70 University of the District of Columbia faculty members
voted yesterday to call for the resignation of UDC President Tilden
J. LeMelle, one week after he and the trustees dissolved the Faculty
Senate.
The UDC faculty - particularly the former senate leadership,
which called yesterday's meeting - has had a stormy relationship
with almost every president of the 12,000-student institution.
In recent months, the officers of the now-defunct 60-member
senate have been increasingly critical of LeMelle's efforts to make
up a $7.5 million budget shortage and streamline the school's
bureaucracy. They said his plan for carrying out furloughs mandated
