Article: Famed Army General James A. Van Fleet Dies

James A. Van Fleet, 100, an Army general whose record in two world wars and later campaigns against communist forces in Greece and Korea made him one of the nation's most respected military leaders, died in his sleep Sept. 23 at his home in Polk City, Fla.

The cause of death was not reported, but he had been in failing health since suffering a stroke a few years ago.

When Gen. Van Fleet retired from the Army in 1953, President Harry S. Truman described him as "the greatest general we have ever had."
