It was a much-diminished Ross Perot who entered the presidential
race yesterday. The candidate, who once terrorized the two major
parties and briefly led President Bush and Democrat Bill Clinton,
has lost at least half the support he once had and may lack the
strength even to tip the outcome either way.
Republicans welcomed Perot's decision as a media event that
will, at least for a few days, shake up a contest that seemed to be
headed Clinton's way. Clinton aides said that in their recent
polling they could not find a single state where Perot's candidacy
could affect the outcome.
Perot appears to draw slightly more from Clinton than Bush, and
Clinton himself has expressed anxiety that ...
