A House committee chairman yesterday urged President Bush to
fire Ronald W. Roskens, director of the Agency for International
Development, saying Roskens "abused his public office for private
gain."
Rep. John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.), chairman of the Government
Operations Committee, which oversees the beleaguered agency, said an
investigation conducted by the committee staff found that Roskens
billed the government for "travel to visit . . . family and friends
and to take vacations."
Conyers, in a statement inserted yesterday in the Congressional
Record, said Roskens also accepted gratuities from private
organizations doing business with AID. The committee investigation
