Just 39 years old, Jim Riggleman must command respect from that
most unrespectful of creatures, the major league baseball player.
Men many years older than the Padres' new manager have tried and
failed. Witness Greg Riddoch, 47, the man whom Riggleman replaced at
the helm of the Padres last week, who was run out of town according
to some of his players.
But Riggleman, who played high school ball at Richard
Montgomery in Rockville, not only commands his players' respect, but
their devotion.
"He's a real professional that has respect for his players and
respect for the game," said Jim Deshaies, a Padres veteran pitcher
who played under Riggleman at Class AAA Las Vegas earlier this year. ...
