Article: Shopkeepers face fines after selling spray paint illegally

SHOPKEEPERS near graffiti hotspots could face heavy fines after selling spray paint to under-16s.

Durham Police identified graffiti as a major reason for people believing the county was not safe when it launched its StreetSafe clampdown on anti-social behaviour two years ago.

In recent weeks, teenage volunteers were sent into shops near badly-affected areas by Durham County Council's trading standards team.

Of the eight shops tested, two shops in Durham City served a 13- year-old and one shop in Willington served a 15year-old with spray paint.

Last night, trading standards divisional manager Chris Cooper said he would not rule out further action against the stores.
