So the trashing of Thomas Jefferson is well underway {"Thomas
Jefferson, Tarnished Icon?" Style, Oct. 17}. He was racist and he
kept slaves etc. The modern idea of the intellectual equality of the
races of mankind in the face of what appear to be massively
different cultural attainments is based on a great deal of fairly
recent knowledge that Jefferson didn't have. When we trash him for
his failure to anticipate 20th century thought, we might note that
he wasn't too good at relativity theory or quantum mechanics either.
The fact is that Jefferson did more to bring about the end of
slavery and the elevation of minorities than all but a handful
