The National League's owners voted decisively here this
afternoon to reject a proposal by Florida-based investors to buy the
Giants and move them to the Tampa-St. Petersburg area, clearing the
way for the team to remain in San Francisco under new - and
presumably soon to be officially approved - ownership.
"The NL did what it thought was right," said Bud Selig,
chairman of baseball's Executive Council. "You're damned if you do,
and damned if you don't."
An often-contentious ordeal in which the two communities fought
mercilessly for the privilege to house the Giants climaxed with a
long day of behind-closed-doors meetings for the game's 28 owners.
