For Caroline Stewart, the hottest new boarding school plan means
on the weekends, she can burn up the phone lines with calls to her
boyfriend.
Monday through Friday, the high school senior lives at an
exclusive and rule-bound private school here. But come Friday,
Stewart drives an hour home to "my own phone and home-cooked meals."
Weekday boarding is becoming increasingly popular among students
and parents seeking to combine the rigors of boarding schools with
the comforts of home.
In 1991, the bible for boarding schools, a directory by the
National Association of Independent Schools, listed five schools
that offered five-day boarding. The directory just off the press
lists 62.
