KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Eric Chia Eng Hock, former Perwaja Steel managing director, was known for his bold and hard-driving management style.

But no one can dispute that the man who made his first million at 30, was a genius of a businessman who founded Malaysia's largest engineering group, United Motor Works Holdings, and subsequently helped Hicom, Airod and Proton to jumpstart in the business world.

However, life for the young Chia, born in Singapore in 1933, and his 18 other brothers and sisters was not easy although their father, a Hakka fishmonger turned to repairing bicycles and motorcycles, and had businesses all over the island.
