The biggest factor in the Washington Capitals' recent surge has
been the success of the power play, currently the best in the
National Hockey League at a 27.3 percent conversion rate.
Over the last 12 games, while the Capitals have compiled a
10-1-1 record, they have connected on 21 of 63 extra-man
opportunities for 33.3 percent. Twice, against the New York Rangers
and New Jersey Devils, they have converted four power-play chances.
A successful power play is doubly important, because in
addition to producing goals, it has an effect on the crowd. Capital
Centre fans who expect a goal on every power play have often turned
on the team when it's performed poorly with the extra man.
